In Color
Hello friends,
We are happy to announce our new album, In Color is coming out on June 2nd. This will be our 8th album, whew! We wrote it during the pandemic when we couldn’t be in the same country, much less the same room. The concept for this album was simple: write a song for each color on the color wheel. We thought about what each color means to us – red is powerful, yellow is soft, blue is sadness, and did our best to write tunes that captured those emotions.
Pre-order on Bandcamp
The album will be available on vinyl and our favorite antiquated technology, CD. You can preorder now on our Bandcamp page. We also have a new shirt in case your old Bombadil shirt is wearing thin.
First Single - Orange Planets
Our first single, Orange Planets is out today! You can stream it everywhere. We're told that saving the song on Spotify helps our cause, but only if your mouse finger is not too tired. The song is about planets looking like distant fruit in the sky….and Hollywood movie stars that are actually celestial beings floating alongside the aforementioned spatial fruit. James made an awesome lyric video here.
Summer Tour
We will be on tour all over the US. West Coast, East Coast, Middle Coast (if Canada was an ocean). Stuart Robinson and MK Rodenbough will be joining us for all North American shows. You can see all of the dates here. We will be announcing more concerts soon and the occasional hole in the schedule we'd love to fill by playing in your backyard.
More about the new album
(this is kinda of long, you can also just skip to the bottom)
Because James and I couldn’t hang out for two years, we had to develop a new way of working together, over the internet and across the ocean. At the same time, we wanted to infuse more creativity and joy into our work, both for the progression of our sound and for ourselves. It was time for a new approach.
We decided that one of us would compose chords and instrumentation while the other would work on lyrics and melody. We traded roles equally across the album. We also decided that if you wrote a part, you couldn’t play it or sing it on the record. You had to pass it on to another member. We asked our friends Nick Vandenberg and Skylar Gudasz to be our primary collaborators and interpreters throughout this process, and later added vocals from new band member MK Rodenbough.
In addition to working with new folks, we wanted to rely mostly on new sounds. Across three home studios, we experimented with vintage keyboards and drum machines, wonky acoustic guitar, flute, and fresh lead vocals (from people other than us!). We had so much fun with these new instruments and hope you can hear it reflected in the music.
With every new album, our sound has changed and evolved, but the core of what makes us Bombadil has remained the same: folk pop songwriting with heart. If you’ve been listening for a while, we want to thank you for sticking with us all this time. If you’re new here, welcome! Either way, we hope you’ll enjoy In Color and maybe come see us play it for you sometime soon.
Thank you for your continued support. More to come.
Xoxo,
Daniel and James
